Understanding Colon and Rectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer or colon cancer occurs in the colon or rectum. The colon is the part of the large intestine. The rectum is the passageway that connects the colon to the anus.

Colon cancer, when discovered early is treatable. Even if it spreads into nearby lymph nodes, surgical treatment followed by chemotherapy is highly effective. In the most difficult cases when cancer has spread to the liver, lungs, or other site treatment can help make surgery options for many, as well as prolonging and adding to one’s quality of life. Research is constantly being done to learn more and provide hope for people no matter what stages they are at?

Most colon cancer develops first as polyps, which are abnormal growth inside the colon or rectum that may later become cancerous if not removed. Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in men and women in all the different countries. Deaths from colorectal cancer have decreased with the use of colonoscopies and fecal outlets blood tests, which check for the blood in the stool.

Colon cancer is a disease in which the malignant cells form in the tissues of the colon. The colon is the part of the body’s digestive system. Signs and symptoms of the colon cancer tend not to be specific. The signs and symptoms can occur due to a number of different conditions. When cancer is detected at early stages, it may not have even caused symptoms

Symptoms can vary accordingly to the specific location within the colon where the tumor is located

• Bleeding in the stool

• Dark colored stool

• Change in the stool consistency

• Constipation

• Diarrhea

• Narrow stools

• Digital colon examination

• Fecal occult blood test

• Examination by barium enema

• The stages of cancer, whether the cancer is in the inner lining of the colon, or has spread to the lymph nodes or the other places of the body

• Whether cancer has blocked or made a hole in the colon

• Whether there are any cancer cells left in the surgery or not

• Whether cancer has recurred

• The patient’s general health condition

• Rectal cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissue of the rectum

• Age and history can affect the risk of the rectal cancer

• Signs of rectal cancer include a change in the habits or blood in the stool

• Tests that examine the rectum or colon are used to detect and diagnose rectal cancer

Rectal cancer is a disease in which the malignant (cancerous) cells form in the tissue of the rectum

Signs and symptoms of rectal cancer

• Blood in the stool

• Change in the habits-diarrhea, constipation, feeling that the bowel does not empty completely, stool that are narrower or have a different shape than usual

• Abdominal discomfort-frequent gas pains, cramps, and others

• Change in appetite

• Weight loss for no unknown reason

• Feeling very tired

Tests that examine the rectum and colon are used to detect and diagnose rectum cancer

• Physical examination and history

• Digital rectum exam

• Colonoscopy

• Biopsy

Change in recovery and treatment options

• The stage of cancer, whether it affects the inner lining of the rectum only involves the whole rectum or has spread to the lymph nodes, nearby organs, or others places in the body

• Whether the tumor has spread into or through the bowel wall

• Where the cancer is found in the rectum

• Whether the entire tumor can be removed by surgery.
